OCT: Collage Nite - introducing OFF CUTS

  • Small Walter 503A Morris Street La Conner, Washington, 98257 United States (map)

OFF CUTS - an opportunists collective.

Collage (1937)
Kurt Schwitters (German, 1887 - 1948)

Who are we that cannot discard a printed steel can? What is it that we are doing when we save a  beautiful cardboard box? When we cut out a logo from a candy wrapper and stick it to our fridge with a magnet, what do we call ourselves? In the moment of scrounging, when we are aware that the potential of ephemera is not yet spent, what are we doing, and who are our colleagues?

We are Opportunists! And we want Opportunist friends! This is a social gathering focused on actively looking at our surroundings for the things that would normally be cast aside. Old receipts, gum wrappers, bits of paper, an old to do list.

Hosted by myself and Connie Millsaps, our gallery artist from August we will ask you to cut and glue your personal ephemera (trash) into a collage that can continue to live in your life; in a new,, intriguing small format art work. Think about a deck of cards, and what you could create using only one card from the deck, with some scissors and glue. A new way to see your trash. Bring what you find, share what you know, trade for what you need, listen to what you can learn.

“Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
— Adam Grant

Please RSVP so we’ve got a loose head count. Please also feel free to bring other media/trash, as well as ideas for how to use them, to share with others. Cereal boxes, old newspapers or magazines, etc. And maybe a pair of scissors.

This event is by donation. We’ll have Venmo available as well as a cash jar the day of the event.
