Sticky Summers: Landscape Melting Towards Abstraction

For most of us, where we are born does not always equal where we call home. Factors contributing to outmigration like economics, culture, and opportunity mean that we get to choose where and who we want to be. But this choice is not always simple. The thickness of the American South has a way of holding on to people for generations. Tension between a chosen home and the Southern inherited one turned the artist into a bee stuck in its own honey.

 From 2016 to present, the artist bounced between the South and the Pacific Northwest. This back and forth underlined the similarities and differences between these two places. These paintings are of that abstracted cognitive boundary. Made predominantly last summer, these works are produced in two ways. They are sourced from images of the PNW painted with longing, and painted en plein air in the sweaty Tennessee heat.

The resulting work plays a game with us. Can we tell which side of the divide they depict?
